Happiness, contrary to popular belief, doesn’t come from fortune, fame or other people: happiness comes from within, and it’s completely a matter of choice – you can choose to look at the bright side of life even in the toughest moments, or you can make them tens of times more difficult by choosing to feel miserable.

If you’re stuck and don’t know how to find the seed of happiness inside you – you can start by imitating those who know what it looks like and adopting some of their habits, so here they are:

1. Speak well of others

OK, gossiping can be fun, but it really feels better when you’re nice and try to find and emphasize the best in people. When you say nice things to and about others your thoughts are focused on being positive, and that feeling easily transfers to you.

2. Be in control

Happy people know how to live their lives and not to let others control their destinies. Have your life in your own hands and don’t let anyone influence you.

3. Listen to others

When you’re the one who constantly speaks, you leave little room for the wisdom of others to touch you – you keep focusing on your thoughts and, if they’re negative, you add more power to them. Clear your mind from judgment and lower down your defenses – start listening to others with an open mind and let yourself experience another outlook on the world.

4. Dream big

Small dreams lead to small results – and not only that, every obstacle seems like a mountain when your you put a low ceiling to your dream. Dare to dream big and allow yourself to accomplish big goals – you will be more focused and small distractions and obstacles won’t be disturbing you as much.

5. Be wise when choosing friends

Surround yourself with optimistic people who will support and encourage you to achieve your goals. Remember, misery likes company, so don’t be its friend!

6. Accept the things you can’t change

Don’t fight them – fight means resistance, and the more you resist something the more you’re focused on it – then it becomes a huge part of your reality, and you still can’t change it. Accept it, let it pass through you and let it go – that’s the only way to neutralize the things that bug you and are beyond your control.

7. Forgive and forget

Don’t hold grudges – negative feelings that you hold on to can easily overpower your positive feelings, so just let them out of your system. This means that you need to forgive yourself as well đŸ™‚

8. There are no problems, there are only challenges

Your perception can change everything: a problem is a problem only if you let it trouble you. A challenge, on the other hand, can inspire you, so the next time you face an obstacle remember to say to yourself: this isn’t a struggle, this is an opportunity, how can I make the best out of it?

9. No excuses

Never make excuses, never blame others. If others are responsible for your failures, then they’re also responsible for your successes. Isn’t it better to know that you’re the one in charge? When you are, you will be proactively doing everything you can to change your life for the better. As long as your life is a result of someone else’s doing, there’s not much, at least not in your mind, that you can do to change it either way.

10. Live in the present

No dwelling on the past, no worries about the future. Make the best out of where you are and what you have right now!

11. Be grateful for what you have

Yearning for what you don’t have makes you feel the lack of it even more – try counting your blessings instead and being grateful for what you already have. This doesn’t mean that your dreams will get smaller, it just helps you to better connect with yourself and what really makes you happy so that you can better direct your big dreams.

12. Don’t compare yourself to others

Everyone has their own life, and you’re in charge of yours. You don’t need to feel superior nor inferior to anyone. There’s only one person that you should try to outplay, and that’s the person you were yesterday.

13. Take the time for yourself

If you don’t take time to better know yourself and to learn what it is that you really want, enjoy, what makes you happy, you will easily drift away from it and before you know it, you’ll be miserable without knowing the reason. Meditate, walk, read… whatever you enjoy the most. Your “me-time” should be the most important time of your day or week.

14. Eat well and exercise

Take good care of your body – it goes everywhere with you, and you want to have a reliable companion on your journey!
