Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra is a Hindu Indian-American physician, a holistic health/New Age guru, and alternative medicine practitioner. He is the founder of The Chopra Center for well-being in Carlsbad, California, and New York City, and co-founder and president of the Alliance for a New Humanity. He focuses on the areas of success, love, sexuality and relationships, well-being, and spirituality, and was called one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century in the June 1999 issue of Time magazine.

Deepak Chopra was born on  October 22, 1947 in New Delhi, India.

When he was young, he wanted to become an actor or journalist, but he later decided that he wanted to become a doctor, thanks to a character in Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis that inspired him.

Chopra completed his primary education at St. Columba’s School in New Delhi and graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

In 1970 moved to the United States to pursue his career in Wetern medicine, with only $25 in his pocket. He landed in Boston, where he quickly rose to chief of medicine at New England Memorial Hospital.

But soon, despite his rising career, Chopra became disenchanted with Western medicine and its reliance on prescription drugs – during that time he smoked up to a pack of cigarettes a day and drank consistently. He once said: “Very unhappy people, physicians. (…) The relatives of patients with whom they deal are demanding, litigious, intimidating. (…) Most of my fellow colleagues were very stressed; a lot of them were addicts. I used to experience the most extraordinary frustration and tightness.” (source)

Then he read a book on transcendental medicine that changed his life, and eventually his career path – his interest in alternative medicine and his view on the limits of Western medicine deepened. After a meeting with transcendental meditation guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Chopra quit his job at New England Memorial Hospital and started the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Products International, which he co-founded with the Maharishi.

By the early 1990s Chopra had relocated to California, where he became the executive director of the Sharp Institute for Human Potential and Mind/Body Medicine, and in 1995 he started the Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla.

By this time he was already a successful author: his first book, Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine, published in 1989, had already become an instant success, but the publication of Ageless Body, Timeless Mind in 1993 made him one of the leading faces of the self-help industry.

In June 1999, Time magazine dubbed Chopra “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine”; he was a regular guest at the Oprah Winfrey Show and, before the singer’s death, was a confidante of Michael Jackson.

Deepak Chopra is married to his longtime wife, Rita, and they reside in California.

Teachings and Philosophy

The Chopra Center for Well Being in California serves as a vehicle for spreading his message of alternative medicine and holistic well being – their mission is “bridging the technological miracles of the west with the wisdom of the east”.

Deepak Chopra believes that, in order to attain happiness, we need to consider several things: first, we should find time for meditation and silencing the mind, because it helps us to avoid negative emotions and thoughts which are like toxins, just like bad food could be. According to him, there is a close connection between our physical health and our state of mind, so to improve physical health we should be very careful about what we eat as well as eating “in the right consciousness”.

In his popular book Seven Secrets to Success, he says that if we want to lead a successful (and happy) life, it is important follow one’s true path in life (dharma) with an attitude of detachment and self giving.

Whatever relationships you have attracted in your life at this moment, are precisely the ones you need in your life at this moment. There is a hidden meaning behind all events, and this hidden meaning is serving your own evolution.

Holding on to anything is like holding on to your breath. You will suffocate. The only way to get anything in the physical universe is by letting go of it. Let go & it will be yours forever.

Happiness for a reason is just another form of misery because the reason can be taken away from us at any time.

The worst curse to befall anyone is stagnation, a banal existence, the quiet desperation that comes out of a need for conformity.

In the video below Deepak Chopra is discussing the connection between poverty, wealth and the law of attraction:
